KAMRAD is a rising artist, writer and producer from Germany who combines elements of Pop, RnB and EDM to create his own compelling style of Pop music. He owes his breakthrough to his pop anthem “I Believe” which has been blazing up the European charts since its release in the spring of 2022. The song has ignited a viral fire with several thousand TikTok creations, millions of video views and over 50 million streams on digital music platforms, and counting. But this gifted artist is not only a talented multi-instrumentalist and a songwriter with a style of his own but also a lively and dynamic performer. Since 2023, KAMRAD has been headlining his own European club tour with his band and reaping the rewards of his hard work.
Dal tuo debutto nel 2017, molte cose sono cambiate. Ora sei un astro nascente europeo che continua a crescere. Quando le persone ti presentano nei tuoi spettacoli, dicono: “Tim Kamrad si è reinventato per diventare KAMRAD”. Che cosa significa? E cosa è cambiato per te?
Ho pubblicato la mia prima canzone come artista nel 2016, quando avevo 19 anni e a un certo punto mi sono reso conto che molte cose nella mia vita, compreso il mio stile musicale, sono cambiate da allora. Rinominarmi KAMRAD è stato il mio modo di sottolineare la mia evoluzione come artista e come persona. La mia musica è diventata più elettronica e ballabile e sento che il mio approccio ai testi è un po’ più adulto e personale di prima. Tuttavia, non sono cambiato completamente; la mia musica è la più “mia” che abbia mai avuto. Ecco perché non ho cambiato completamente il nome e l’ho ridotto a KAMRAD.
Since your debut in 2017, a lot has changed you. You are now a European rising star which continues to rise. When people present you in your shows, they say, “Tim Kamrad has reinvented himself to become KAMRAD”. What does it mean? And what changed for you?
I had released my first song as an artist in 2016 when I was 19 and at one point I realized that a lot in my life, including my musical style, changed since then. Renaming myself to KAMRAD was my way of underlining my development as an artist and as a person: My music has become more electronic and danceable and I feel like my approach to lyrics is a bit more grown up and personal than before. Still me, I didn‘t changed completely and my music is the most „me“ that it has ever been. That‘s why I didn‘t changed the name completely and just stripped it down to KAMRAD.
“I Believe” è un vero e proprio inno pop, che ha scalato le classifiche europee sin dalla sua uscita nella primavera del 2022. Ti aspettavi che diventasse così virale?
Quando abbiamo finito “I Believe”, ho avuto subito la sensazione che questa canzone fosse speciale perché non assomigliava a nient’altro e sembrava lo stile di musica che ho sempre voluto fare. Tuttavia, non mi aspettavo che la canzone si avvicinasse al punto in cui è arrivata. Tutto ciò che desideravo era raggiungere le persone che fossero in sintonia con la mia musica e iniziare bene il nuovo capitolo di KAMRAD. Quando mi sono reso conto che “I Believe” era suonata dalle radio di tutta Europa e che così tante persone amano questa canzone, sono stato completamente sopraffatto – e ad essere onesti, lo sono ancora. Sono estremamente grato per quello che è successo nell’ultimo anno e mezzo e non vedo l’ora di fare i prossimi passi.
“I Believe” is a real pop anthem, which has been blazing up the European charts since its release in the spring of 2022. Did you expect it to go viral like that?
When we finished, I Believe“, I immediately had the feeling that this song is special because it didn‘t sound like anything else and felt like the style of music that I always wanted to make. However, I didn‘t expect the song to get even close to where it ended up. All I wished for was reaching some people that connect with my music and start off the new chapter KAMRAD nicely. When I realized that „I Believe“ is being played on the radio all over Europe and that so many people love this song, I was completely overwhelmed – and to be honest, I still am. I‘m extremely grateful for what happened in the last 1,5 years and can‘t wait for the next steps.
Sei un talento polistrumentale e autore delle tue canzoni; com’è stato il tuo approccio alla musica? E quando hai capito che sarebbe stata la sua vocazione?
Volevo fare musica fin da piccolo. Anche mio padre è un musicista per hobby, quindi c’era molta musica in casa quando sono cresciuto. Non appena ho potuto camminare correttamente, ho iniziato a prendere in mano la chitarra e ho cercato di imparare le mie canzoni preferite. In pratica non ricordo un momento in cui non abbia fatto musica. Quando ho finito la scuola, ho deciso di prendere tutti i soldi risparmiati e di produrre il mio primo EP, che è sempre stato il mio sogno più grande. Anche se non è stato sempre facile, sono davvero felice di aver fatto questo passo perché mi ha insegnato molto e ha dato il via alla mia carriera.
You are a multi-instrumental talent and a songwriter; how was your approach to music? And when did you understand that it was going to be your vocation?
I wanted to make music since I was a little kid. My dad is a hobby musician as well, so there was a lot of music in the house when I grew up. As soon as I could walk properly, I started to pick up the guitar and tried to learn my favorite songs. So, I basically don‘t remember a time when I didn‘t make music. When I finished school, I decided to take all my saved up money and produce my first EP which had always been my biggest dream. Even though it wasn‘t always easy along the way, I‘m really happy that I made this move because it taught me so much and started off my whole career.
Sei noto anche per le tue performance dal vivo super-energetiche. Hai detto che esibirsi sul palco è la tua motivazione principale per fare musica. Cosa succede quando sei sul palco?
Quando sono sul palco, posso essere veramente me stesso, non penso a ieri o a domani e vivo il momento. È per questo che amo così tanto esibirmi: la connessione con il pubblico è una sensazione così speciale che non si può paragonare a nient’altro. Nei miei live set cerco di interagire molto con il pubblico, in modo che sembri che l’intera sala sia la band. Inoltre, suono le mie canzoni in versioni nuove e diverse perché ritengo che la musica dal vivo consista nel divertimento e nei momenti inaspettati.
You are also known for your super–energetic live performances. You said that performing on stage was the main motivation for making music. What happens when you are on stage?
When I‘m on stage, I can truly be myself – I don‘t think about yesterday or tomorrow and just live in the moment. This is why I love performing so much, the connection with the audience is such a special feeling that you can‘t really compare to anything else. In my live sets, I try to interact with the audience a lot so it really feels like the whole room is the band. Also, I‘m playing my songs in new and different versions because I feel like live music is about having fun and about the unexpected moments.
Hai aperto il concerto del cantante pop tedesco Nico Santos e ti sei esibito in innumerevoli festival e concerti. Presto sarai protagonista di un tour nei club europei con la tua band. Qual è il prossimo obiettivo da raggiungere?
Prima di tutto, sono estremamente eccitato per tutti gli spettacoli di quest’anno: quest’estate suoneremo in molti festival e subito dopo partirò per il mio primo tour europeo. Non vedo l’ora di conoscere tutte le persone a cui piacciono le mie canzoni e di fare una grande festa con loro. Inoltre, sto lavorando a un EP che uscirà quest’anno. Sono così felice della musica che sto facendo in questo momento e non vedo l’ora che tutti la sentano dal vivo e su disco.
You opened German pop singer Nico Santos’s gig and performed at countless festivals and open-air concerts. Now you are headlining your own European club tour with your band. What is the next goal on the list?
First of all, I‘m extremely excited for all the shows this year – we‘re playing a lot of festival shows this summer and right after that I will go on my first own european tour. I can‘t wait to get to know all the people that like my songs and just have a big party with them. In addition to that I‘m working on an EP right now that will come out this year. I‘m so happy with the music that I’m making right now and can‘t wait for everyone to hear it live and on the record.
