Ciao e grazie per avermi ospitato! Non credo di essere molto diverso da quello che ero da bambino se è questo che intendi per ieri. Certo, sono cresciuto, immagino di essere un po ‘più maturo ma, tuttavia, penso e agisco ancora allo stesso modo. Voglio solo continuare a fare ciò che amo di più e ciò che mi rende felice: fare musica.
Tuttavia, se c’è una cosa che è cambiata è la mia comprensione del settore. Ho capito che dovevo essere il più libero possibile per far accadere le cose, che non volevo aspettare niente e nessuno. Avevo un contratto con una major, ma dovevo sempre aspettare qualcosa: progetti, uscite di altri artisti, decisioni di A&R … Così l’anno scorso ho deciso di rompere il mio contratto e fare tutto da solo, dalla mia camera da letto. Voglio solo creare e pubblicare musica il più spontaneamente possibile, perché è di questo che si tratta. Quindi sì, se sono tutto ciò che hai menzionato sopra, è solo perché dovevo “aha”. Fare musica nella mia camera da letto e girare video musicali con il mio iPhone.
I tuoi video sono molto diretti, semplici, con pochi elementi e tutti studiati nei minimi dettagli. Sono espressione rumorosa della tua genuinità.
Credi che sia questo tuo modo di essere autentico, la carta vincete del tuo successo?
Grazie, sono davvero felice che ti siano piaciuti i miei video! Ho detto ai miei amici per anni che non abbiamo bisogno di un big-budget video per fare contenuti cool “ahah”. Penso che le persone possano identificarsi con qualcosa che avrebbero potuto fare da sole. Filmando con il mio iPhone, ho usato uno strumento che quasi tutti hanno, quindi credo che abbia aumentato la consapevolezza della gente.
Ma in realtà, la prima ragione è che non ho molti soldi per pagare una grande troupe e un famoso regista “Ahah”. Tuttavia, l’immagine è davvero importante per me, così ho voluto girare video in ogni caso. Ho cercato di catturare un particolare sentimento con ogni video musicale, in un colpo solo, il più semplice possibile.
Voci di bambini aprono e chiudono il brano “bye bye”, perchè questa scelta? Da cosa è stato dettato l’inserimento di questo particolare elemento?
Sì, in realtà “bye bye” è una canzone di rottura tra due persone veramente giovani. La canzone parla di dover lasciare qualcuno come se fosse il tuo primo amore. È probabilmente la prima decisione più difficile che un bambino deve prendere. Le voci nell’introduzione e nel outro della canzone rappresentano un cortile della scuola. Amo includere suoni ambientali nelle mie canzoni, dà contesto ad ogni storia.
Il tuo stile è sicuramente uno stile molto ricercato e in costante evoluzione. Quando ascolto i tuoi brani, ad ognuno di esso associo questo pensiero: “Chissà cosa ha combinato di nuovo questa volta?!”
Tipo effetto sorpresa. Da quel pensiero poi nasce la domanda.
Come riesci a tenere viva e a rinnovare la tua creatività, in un momento storico come quello che stiamo vivendo oggi? Che consigli vuoi dare, a chi come te è un’artista?
Quando ho iniziato questo progetto « Home of Sanity » di rilascio su pack ogni mese, ho fatto una promessa a me stesso : provare quante più cose possibili. Ho così tanto da imparare, non volevo mettere già la mia musica in una scatola, volevo esplorare. Ci sono così tanti generi che mi ispirano, ascolto un sacco di cose diverse fintanto che la melodia mi colpisce. Quindi è così che vengo ispirato, ascoltando la musica degli altri.
Ogni volta che sento qualcosa che amo e che non ho mai sentito prima sono come « oh voglio fare una canzone come questa ». Potrebbe essere musica jazz, elettronica, pop o reggae, non mi importa finché sento qualcosa mentre lo faccio. E ovviamente, visto che eravamo tutti in quarantena, ho avuto molto tempo per scoprire nuovi artisti e scavare un po’ più a fondo, non ho mai avuto una playlist così grande. Penso che devo ancora prendere consigli prima di riuscire a darne qualcuno “ahah”, ma credo che non dovremmo avere paura di rilasciare musica. Vogliamo sempre che sia perfetto, e aspettiamo il momento perfetto, ma l’unico modo per migliorare è andare avanti. Creare, rilasciare e ripetere. Ho imparato così tanto quest’anno. Dobbiamo credere che le nostre migliori canzoni siano sempre ancora da scrivere, quindi continuate a inseguirle e non fermatevi mai.
A proposito, sono abbastanza sicuro di aver preso questo consiglio da un’intervista di Ed Sheeran.

Ogni volta che mi sento giù penso al surf. Non so perché, ma c’è qualcosa di così calmo, puro e rilassante su questo sport. Guardo i video di surf quasi ogni mattina prima di alzarmi. C’è questo account Instagram che amo @surfersofbali per chi è interessato 😉
Perchè la scelta dei sottotitoli?
In questo modo le persone possono cantare insieme “ahah”. Davvero, questo è il motivo. E ‘come una versione karaoke cool.

Hello, and thanks for having me! I don’t think that I’m really different from who I was as a kid if that’s what you mean by yesterday. Of course, I’ve grown, I guess I’m a little more mature but yet, I still think and act the same. I just want to keep doing what I love the most and what makes me happy: making music.
However, if there’s one thing that has changed it’s my understanding of the industry. I understood that I had to be as free as possible to make things happen, that I didn’t want to wait for anybody or anything. I used to be signed in a major label, but I always had to wait for something: plans, other artist’s releases, A&R decisions … So last year, I decided to break my contract and do everything myself, from my bedroom. I just want to make and release music as spontaneously as possible, cause that’s what it is all about. So yes, if I’m all that you mentioned above, it’s only because I had to aha. Making music in my bedroom and shooting music videos with my iPhone.
Your music videos are very straightforward, simple, with just a few elements, and all of them studied in detail. I define your videos as a noisy expression of your genuineness. Do you think that by being authentic you have gained a winning card to your success?
Thank you, really happy you liked the videos! I said to my friends for years that we don’t need big-budget videos to make cool content aha. I think that people can relate to something they could have done themselves. By filming with my iPhone, I used a tool that almost everybody has, so I guess it raised people’s awareness.
But really, the first reason is that I don’t have a lot of money to pay for a big crew and a famous director “Ahah”. However, image is really important for me, so I really wanted to shoot videos anyway. I tried to capture a particular « feeling » with every music video, in one shot, as simple as possible.
Children’s voices open and close the song “bye-bye”. What made you choose their voices? Is there a specific element that you wanted to add to your song?”
Yes, actually bye-bye is a breakup song between two really young persons. The song talks about having to leave somebody as it’s your first love. It’s probably the first hardest decision a kid has to make. The voices in the intro and outro of the song kinda represent a schoolyard. I love including ambient sounds in my songs, it gives context to each story.
Your style is definitely very refined and constantly evolving. When I listen to your songs, to each of them, I always associate the same thought: “Who knows what he did again this time?!” It is like you already know there is gonna be a surprise effect. From that thought comes the question: How do you manage to keep your creativity alive and up to date in a critical moment, like the one we are experiencing now? What advice do you want to give to artists like you?
When I started this project « Home of Sanity » of releasing on a pack every month, I made a promise to myself: to try as many things as possible. I have so much to learn, I didn’t want to put my music in a box yet, I wanted to explore. There are so many genres that inspire me, I listen to a lot of different things as long as the melody hits me.
So that’s how I get inspired, by listening to other’s people music. Whenever I hear something I love and never heard before I’m like « oh I want to make a song like this ». it could be jazz, electronic, pop, or reggae music I don’t care as long as I feel something while making it. And of course, as we were all quarantined, I had a lot of time to discover new artists and dig a bit further, never had that big of a playlist.
I think that I still have to take advice before giving some “Ahah” but yet I believe that we should not be afraid of releasing music. We always want it to be perfect, and we wait for the perfect moment but the only way of getting better is to move forward. Create, release, and repeat. I learned so much this year by doing so. We have to believe that our best songs are always yet to be written, so keep chasing them and never stop.
By the way, I’m pretty sure I took this advice from one of Ed Sheeran’s interviews actually.

Whenever I feel down I think about surfing. I don’t know why but there’s something so calm, pure and relaxing about this sport. I watch surf videos almost every morning before getting up. There’s this Instagram account that I love @surfersofbali for those interested 😉
Why the choice of subtitles for your music videos?
That way people can sing along “ahah”. Really that’s it, this is the reason. It’s like a cool karaoke version.
